Persistent Systems and TGen Collaborate on Biospecimens Management Bio4D Software

New Biospecimens Management System in Development

Persistent Systems and TGen collaborate on Bio4D software program; System will provide timely information for oncologists about patient care

SANTA CLARA, Calif. and PHOENIX, Ariz. — May 14, 2012 — Persistent Systems (BSE & NSE: PERSISTENT), the leader in outsourced software product development (OPD) services, and the Translational Genomics Research Institute (TGen) today announced that they are developing a high-quality biospecimen management system called Bio4D.

Initial versions of the Bio4D software, created to manage biological repositories for genetic and genomic research, have been used at TGen in the investigation of the underlying causes of disease.
Now, Persistent Systems and TGen are developing a robust commercial version of Bio4D to manage the collection, processing, storage, distribution and analysis of biospecimens, which includes blood, DNA, and tissue samples, including samples from cancer biopsies.

Systems such as Bio4D are critical to the advancement of personalized medicine, in which physicians guide care based on the genetic profile of each patient.

“Ultimately, tools like Bio4D have the potential to transform the management of biospecimens and supporting research data in a way that speeds information between researchers and oncologists,” said Dr. Jeffrey Trent, TGen’s President and Research Director. “Accelerating this process is one more way we can benefit patients.”

A key component of Bio4D will be its ease of use. Unlike generic LIMS (Laboratory Information Management Systems), Bio4D will be equipped with features and functionality specifically designed for the needs of biobank scientists and biospecimen managers.

“Bio4D’s design tool greatly simplifies the study and data collection process, enforces good biospecimen management practices and compliance with global regulatory requirements,” said Peter Boler, Senior Vice President, Life Sciences and Healthcare, Persistent Systems. “The solution’s web-based technology means oncologists will be able to access data and system analysis results in real time from any industry standard Web browsers including IE, Firefox, Safari, etc. and operating systems such as MS Windows, MAC, Linux and Unix, making it easier than ever before to mine information and develop correlative analyses.”

Bio4D’s search abilities will include clinical and molecular profile parameters, using a set of filters that could help lead to the discovery or validation of biomarkers, diagnostics and therapeutics. Bio4D has the potential to accelerate discovery in the laboratory, and help translate that information to oncologists working with clinical patients.

Bio4D is also being designed to help address high levels of regulatory, ethical and legal scrutiny that surrounds the biomedical management of biospecimens in association with clinical and non-clinical trials.
Today’s announcement about Bio4D is being made in conjunction with the International Society for Biological and Environmental Repositories (ISBER) 2012 Annual Meeting, May 15-18, 2012, at the Westin Bayshore Hotel in Vancouver, B.C.

SALT LAKE CITY – May 11, 2012 – Remedy Informatics, Inc. further strengthened its position as the leader in life science and translational research informatics today with its announcement of revolutionary new biorepository informatics software, SpecimenTrack™.  Remedy will offer demonstrations of SpecimenTrack at the upcoming International Society for Biological and Environmental Repositories (ISBER) 2012 Annual Meeting & Exhibit May 15-17, in Vancouver, BC, Canada (Booth #15).

At the core of SpecimenTrack is intuitive management of biorepository workflows in sample collection, inventory, processing, and distribution with particular emphasis on saving time through reduced complexity and ease of use with a modern, web-based application that facilitates collaboration.  To keep pace with changing biorepository informatics needs, SpecimenTrack has configurable sample types, storage containers, and workflow automation templates that can be easily modified by researchers without software coding. Further, SpecimenTrack plugs into Investigate™, Remedy’s translational informatics system that breaks down traditional barriers between sample management, study management, lab information management systems, electronic lab notebooks, and clinical registries.

“We built SpecimenTrack with the recognition that biorepositories cannot stand alone in translational research; they have a central role in enabling connectivity between lab and clinic far beyond a logistical collection of freezers and samples. There is vast potential in both high quality biospecimens and metadata currently locked up in biorepositories around the world that, if properly integrated, can drive benchside research, drug discovery, and clinical outcomes,” said Hank Wu, Director of Translational Informatics for Remedy Informatics. “The dual informatics challenges of Translational Research 2.0 are to connect and harmonize traditionally separate data sets and disciplines from the lab, clinic, and biobank, and to enable researchers to conduct deep interpretation of the data with powerful pattern recognition tools. SpecimenTrack coupled with Investigate represents a significant leap forward for biobanks and translational research institutions by giving them powerful tools to maximize the research potential of biospecimens.”

Built on the powerful Mosaic™ Platform, SpecimenTrack and Investigate are highly configurable research management software that enable researchers to customize data capture forms, workflows, visual queries, dashboards, and data models to their specific needs. Core to the platform is the Mosaic™ Ontology, which enables researchers to harmonize and map data from disparate data sources, and to adapt the data model to changing research needs over time by adding new terms and concepts. Together, SpecimenTrack and Investigate enable translational researchers to natively connect biospecimen data into benchside and bedside research.

“As we work to improve researchers’ ability to discern and discover patterns in their research it is essential that we provide the tools for them to access all available data so they can gain a true 360-degree view of the biological systems that impact disease,” said Gary Kennedy, Founder & CEO of Remedy Informatics. “SpecimenTrack focuses on biobanking but it is also an integral part of the 360-degree whole to help researchers discover the patterns hidden in their data, and ultimately to take giant leaps forward in medical innovation.”

SpecimenTrack and Investigate are both currently being implemented by two leading translational research institutions: (1) The Frederick National Laboratory for Cancer Research, a flagship set of ten laboratories of the National Cancer Institute with particular focus on next-generation sequencing and ‘omics technologies; and (2) the Oklahoma Medical Research Foundation (OMRF), where integrated lab, biospecimen, and study management will play a key role in research on auto-immune disorders, cancer, Parkinson’s disease and many other disorders.

Remedy will demonstrate SpecimenTrack with Investigate at BOOTH #15 at the ISBER 2012 Annual Meeting and Exhibit in Vancouver, BC, Canada May 15 – 17.

Chemical Management Software Suite Performs Manufacturing Execution, Warehouse Management, LIMS and Recipe Development Functions

Valdata Systems Chemical Management software suite (“CMS”) has been designed to incorporate easy to navigate menus and a ‘prompt and police’ theme throughout, aiding in the ease of use and implementation of this highly sophisticated system. CMS consists of four interrelated modules including Manufacturing Execution, Warehouse Management, LIMS and Recipe Development.

This is a departure from typical, complicated MRP / ERP systems that are not only complex on the back-end, but on the user facing side as well. This often increases implementation and training costs, employee resistance, and difficulty achieving an effective transition.

No one disputes that a system must be sophisticated to achieve desired results. Valdata’s perspective is that this complexity does not need to translate into a difficult to use system. Rather, CMS achieves a high level of complexity but presents it in a way that is free flowing and simple to use: ‘Sophisticated Simplicity in Manufacturing’.

One of Valdata Systems customers had this to say:
"...Valdata's [System] has streamlined our raw material weighing and batch process operations, while improving inventory accuracy and process control. The Compound operators find the system easy to navigate and use, resulting in improved efficiency”. George Ott, Chanel Director of Manufacturing.
Valdata Systems customers have installed, trained and implemented systems in as little as six months. Due to the easy to use nature of the system, across the board employee feedback is positive and all that were interviewed said that they would not go back to their previous methods.

About Valdata Systems
Headquartered in Fairfield, NJ, Valdata Systems is a premier provider of Chemical Management solutions specifically targeting the Pharmaceutical, Flavor & Fragrance, Nutraceutical and Chemical Manufacturing industries.

LABVANTAGE 6 Released

(I am about a month late on this one)

Somerset, NJ. January 18, 2012. LABVANTAGE, which offers a comprehensive portfolio of products and services for the laboratory, including LIMS, ELN, and business intelligence, announced today the release of LABVANTAGE 6, the world’s most powerful LIMS. Loaded with new features including enhancements to batch management, new event-driven flexibility, advanced instrument integration, and support for both desktop and mobile devices, LABVANTAGE 6 is the culmination of SQL*LIMS, which was acquired from Life Technologies Corporation in 2009, and the legacy LABVANTAGE product lines.
“LABVANTAGE 6 is the result of a unique development project that leveraged decades of diverse laboratory knowledge and experience across many industries,” revealed Jeff Ferguson, LABVANTAGE Chief Executive Officer. “It is not just a marriage of two of the best LIMS in the industry; it is the application of today’s technology to the accumulated requirements of the past two and a half decades.”
The new LABVANTAGE 6 enables organizations to focus on their business while minimizing complexities. Features such as the Navigator, a powerful SQL*LIMS feature now present in LABVANTAGE 6, introduces flexible and dynamic drill down on hierarchical data. For example, combining the LABVANTAGE Viewer with improved batch and genealogy management, identifying root cause and affected batches becomes easier than ever. In addition, LABVANTAGE 6 now provides dynamic field creation, which simplifies the storage of ad-hoc data that may be captured during testing.
LABVANTAGE 6 facilitates LIMS administration and management tasks. LIMS administrators can now maintain system permissions in collections that allows users to dynamically change their role assignments and data filtering. LABVANTAGE 6 streamlines workflow through event-driven alerts and actions by empowering administrators to build conditional logic without using computer code.
This new version continues the paper paradigm to the electronic laboratory notebook (ELN). Using the LABVANTAGE eForms technology, worksheets, laboratory notebook pages, printed instrumentation logs, and questionnaires are all transformed into an electronic format with a look and feel just as familiar as their paper counterparts. The intuitive interface significantly curtails the learning curve required for adopting new software, enabling easier and faster transformation of laboratory data to the paperless environment.
“We engaged customers of both LABVANTAGE and SQL*LIMS product lines since the initial stage of LABVANTAGE 6 development and conducted a thorough gap analysis,” states David Ciabattoni, Sr. Director of Global R&D. “That analysis helped us to prioritize the new features, which were then provided to customers as part of our Early Access program.”
A major research center is one such participant in the Early Access program and expects to go live with their LABVANTAGE 6 system in February 2012. This demonstrates the benefits of the Early Access program, which enables customers to both validate development efforts prior to software release and expedite the adoption of the latest features.
“I’m looking forward to the SQL*LIMS implementation community experiencing the power of the LABVANTAGE Web Page Designer, which can quickly add and modify end-user pages without requiring complex development tools like Oracle Forms,” states Ciabattoni. Ralph Goldberg, R&D Product Manager continues, “For the existing LABVANTAGE customer base, the capabilities added in LABVANTAGE 6 truly complement the features requested by our community over the years.”
Other new LABVANTAGE 6 features include the ability to integrate with Waters Empower systems for a seamless exchange of sample lists and LIMS results. The enhanced toolbar and dynamic search capability with auto-complete improve the user experience. And, with full support for convenient tablet computers and other mobile devices, LABVANTAGE 6 is simultaneously equipped for single-site laboratories, global deployments, and enterprise systems with extended partner organizations.

Global LIMS Market Predicted to Reach $1.4 Billion by 2015

Global Laboratory Information Management Systems Market to Reach US$1.4 Billion by 2015, According to New Report by Global Industry Analysts, Inc.

GIA announces the release of a comprehensive global outlook on the Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMS) Industry. Growth in the global LIMS market would be driven by the increasing adoption of LIMS solutions among research organizations in emerging markets. In addition, technological advancements and the growing popularity of SaaS LIMS are expected to enhance adoption.

San Jose, California (PRWEB) January 19, 2012

Follow us on LinkedIn – Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMS), a part of Information Management Systems, facilitates management of samples, instruments and users in a laboratory set-up through the use of computer hardware and software. China and India offer potential growth opportunities for vendors operating in the global Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMS) market, largely due to the rapid strides made by the two nations in the technological sphere. Growth opportunities for LIMS market are also emerging from Eastern Europe driven by increased activity in pharmaceutical, biotech, and environmental markets.

With several companies expanding their operations in Southeast Asia and Eastern Europe, all businesses, irrespective of scale of operation, would require automated systems to create audit trails, track samples, provide detailed analyses, monitor features, and report from a remote location. Strong, and robust growth patterns in manufacturing industries across developing countries offer a lucrative business case for LIMS, since higher manufacturing activity translates into greater need for manufacturing quality control functions to meet the slated regulatory requirements. Additionally, increased investments in biotechnology and drug development in developing countries, and tougher regulatory requirements are expected to offer lucrative business opportunities for LIMS, as traceability of data gains importance under such a scenario that prioritizes compliance to regulatory norms.

Traditionally, LIMS systems were procured on outright purchase basis, which proved to be time consuming and involved high level of expenditure. The LIMS market is steadily warming up to the Internet based-Software as a Service (SaaS) model, wherein software applications hosted by service providers are licensed/rented to end-users for use over the Internet. Unlike other commercial LIMS applications, SaaS LIMS is hosted on service provider’s server rather than at the end-users lab, and can be accessed by end-users through the Internet. The supply on demand model leverages the benefits offered by service-oriented architecture, Web 2.0 technologies and cloud computing to offer efficient and reliable solutions featuring advanced capabilities, on-demand. SaaS LIMS offers multi-tenant feature, which allows usage of single application and database for managing data for various customers, while sorting each customer’s data separately. If deployed efficiently, SaaS LIMS model offers confidentiality, security and excellent return on investment, all of which are critical requirements in a laboratory set-up.

Though LIMS offers numerous advantages, deployment and implementation continues to be marred by several drawbacks and issues such as high upfront costs for in-house custom systems/solutions, longer implementation time for commercial LIMS solution, functional glitches in fulfilling integrative needs of global companies with dispersed laboratory operations, and competitive threat posed by alternative enterprise-wide operational management systems.

Global market for LIMS is highly competitive and is home to several leading players including Thermo Fisher Scientific, Labware, Labvantage, and Abbott/STARLIMS, among others. Several factors come into play during the vendor selection process such as vendor brand equity, reliability of solutions offered, and the degree of responsiveness to the client in the form of providing proactive technical and customer support services. As a result, players are required to keep updating their core competencies to fend off potential competition. Vendor visibility is crucial, especially in an environment marked by rapid, large-scale adoption of LIMS in a laboratory setting, and spiraling competition.
